Every year, Rightmove delves into the sentiments of residents, asking them to share what brings them joy in their living spaces. Now in its 12th year, its annual Happy at Home Index sheds light on what truly elevates the happiness of residents in certain areas, unravelling the factors that make a place feel like home.
The survey delves into 13 key happiness factors, including the sense of community, green spaces, and the feeling of belonging. With responses from over 26,000 individuals across Great Britain, they compiled the data to unveil the happiest places to live based on residents' scores.

Securing the Crown: Richmond upon Thames
For the first time, a London area, Richmond upon Thames, claims the top spot, dethroning last year's winner, St. Ives in Cornwall. Sadiq Khan, Mayor of London, celebrates Richmond's victory, citing its access to green spaces, strong community bonds, and a vibrant local culture.
Nestled in southwest London, Richmond upon Thames boasts two Royal Parks, renowned botanical gardens, and the artistic enclave of Eel Pie Island. Areas like Twickenham, Hampton, and Richmond contribute to the borough's winning charm.
Dawn Platt, Associate Director of Chestertons' Richmond branch, highlights Richmond's diverse offerings, emphasising its appeal for long-term settlement due to its community feel and lifestyle amenities.
Winchester and Monmouth Secure Top Spots
Winchester in Hampshire claims the second spot, followed by Monmouth in Wales at third place.

Decoding Happiness: What Really Matters?
While practicalities like shops and schools matter, our survey reinforces that intangible elements play a more substantial role in residents' happiness. Factors such as a sense of belonging, community spirit, and the freedom to be oneself contribute significantly to the overall joy of living in an area.
Motivations for Moving: The Quest for Happiness
This year, motivations for moving varied, encompassing reasons from energy cost reduction to finding a home needing renovation. However, the overarching theme reveals that the primary driver for relocation is the quest for an area that enhances personal happiness.
Tim Bannister, Rightmove's property expert, notes the growing trend of individuals seeking homes near green spaces and natural beauty. As such, estate agents are encouraged to emphasise these aspects in their property listings to attract potential buyers.
Considering Relocation: Insights into the Desire for Change
For the first time, Rightmove explored residents' thoughts on potential relocation within Great Britain. A notable 30% expressed the belief that they would be happier in a different area, with over half considering a move to an entirely different region. Coastal areas like Cornwall, Devon, and Dorset emerged as top choices for those contemplating relocation.
